August 2026 | Imelda, Shoes and Why Quality Always Wins

Many years ago, on my last night before boarding a troopship bound for Asia, I decided to splash out almost a week's wages and take my dear mother to dinner.

We went to the newly renovated The Dog Inn by Berni's, a steakhouse chain back in England. I can still remember that meal today. The beef was charcoal grilled and cooked right in front of our eyes. More than fifty years later, I can still taste it.

The funny thing is, I cannot remember what it cost.

What I do remember is the quality.

That experience reinforced something I have believed ever since. People remember quality long after they have forgotten the price.

Which brings me to Imelda Marcos.

Now, my name is not Imelda Marcos with her famous collection of 3,000 pairs of shoes, but when I look in my own shoe cupboard, I have to admit I own rather too many. The reasons are simple.

There are three beliefs that have guided me throughout my life.

Firstly, I value my feet.

They spend every day carrying around 100 kilos of me, so I think they deserve a decent pair of shoes.

Secondly, I buy quality shoes.

They are comfortable, they last, and over time they represent far better value than buying cheaper pairs that need replacing every few months. It is a principle I have applied throughout my life.

Quality will rarely let you down. Price often will.

We've all experienced the bargain toothbrush that falls apart, the toothpaste that tastes dreadful, or the toilet paper that looked like a good deal until you actually used it.

So why am I carrying on about all these things?

Because unlike shoes, food is not optional.

We all need water and food simply to survive. If you are fortunate enough to be reading this, then hopefully you are beyond simply surviving. So, if we have to eat every day, why not eat well?

The best part is that eating well does not have to cost a fortune.

Quality and value are not opposites. In fact, when they come together, they are a wonderful combination.
